Judge Anita Laster Mays Honored By The Cleveland Marshall College of Law Chapter Of The Black Law Students Association

At the 2018-2019 C|M BLSA Scholarship & Awards Banquet at the Aloft Cleveland Downtown, Judge Laster Mays, class of 1992, was presented with the Chapter’s prestigious award for her embodiment of this year’s theme: “Purpose, Passion, & Professionalism; A Pathway to Success.”

Crediting the family values instilled in her from an early age, Judge Laster Mays told the crowd that “purpose” is a tenet that has guided her throughout her life. She stated that although her purpose originated as a commitment to do her personal best in school, sports, and at home, it has evolved into a role of helping others find success and “to make sure that the next generation is equipped with the tools necessary to be successful.”

Judge Laster Mays shared that her purpose is fueled by her passion for people and the rule of law. She has mentored students and attorneys throughout her career.

“My passion is to teach them to love the law and all that is involved in the profession,” Judge Laster Mays told the audience. “Because if you do not love it, you will not be happy.”

On the topic of professionalism, Judge Laster Mays emphasized to the students, “Practice — practice your temperament, oral and written communication, time management, analytical and logical reasoning, legal research, and technological skills.”

Judge Laster Mays thanked BLSA, an entity committed to fostering and encouraging professional competence and supporting Black and minority law students, for the “amazing honor.” She also thanked her husband, Kurt Mays, for his constant support in all her endeavors.
