Judge Deena R. Calabrese Joins the Eighth District Court of Appeals
At her swearing in ceremony, Judge Calabrese's former bailiff and now Berea Clerk of Courts -- Joseph DeMio -- served as master of ceremonies and Eighth District Judge Sean C. Gallagher administered the oath of office.
Judge Calabrese began her remarks to the assembled group by asking her mother to stand and thanking her for not only a lifetime of support and encouragement, but also for "signing that permission slip" for a field trip to the courthouse when she "was just a little girl," an outing that sparked her interest in the law. Judge Calabrese next expressed her delight that all the people she loved were in the room. As she paid tribute to them individually, she quipped that they were "from each decade" of her life, "like my own Eras Tour." The list included longtime friends and colleagues, but most importantly, family, including her "funny, clever, handsome husband, Joe Greiner" who inspires her every day as well as her beautiful children.
Judge Calabrese brings a wealth of experience to the Court, having served as a Common Pleas Court Judge since 2009.
Prior to her 2009 election, Judge Calabrese worked as a prosecutor in both Mahoning and Cuyahoga counties. Her impact extended beyond the courtroom: she played a pivotal role in the creation of Mahoning County's first child advocacy center, the establishment of critical programs under the Violence Against Women Act and she provided expert training for professionals addressing sexual violence.
In addition to her judicial and prosecutorial accomplishments, Judge Calabrese has been an adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law since 2018 where she teaches trial tactics and she also mentors high school mock trial teams.
